When heavy rains in March 2023 hit the dry lake bed of the once saline-rich Owens Lake, California, trona-rich brine overflowed into freshwater ponds, immediately killing most pond life. This flood was quickly followed by rapid evaporation, which allowed trona to quickly replace the form of the frog as it was petrified in a life-like position. The speed of which the frog was mineralized allowed it to be preserved in great detail.
