Staurolite comes from the Greek work stauros meaning cross, named after this mineral’s unique ability to form intersecting formations resembling a cross. This fascinating specimen features a dark staurolite crystal naturally arranged in its intersecting "cross" formation, set against a contrasting gray schist matrix. Because of their natural cross shapes, staurolites have been seen as protective amulets and good luck pieces for centuries. This particular piece has been polished to highlight the pieces natural beauty. While they are found in a few places worldwide, specimens from the remote Kola Peninsula of Russia are highly celebrated by collectors for their sharp, dark crystal outlines and the beautiful contrast they create against their host rock.
