A sphinx is a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human, often wearing a male pharaoh's headdress. The Great Sphinx of Giza is a giant statue near the Great Pyramid in Giza that's 4,500 years old. It measures 240 feet long and 66 feet high, and would have taken 100 men 3 years to carve the statue from the single piece of limestone it's sculpted from.
The sphinx also appeared in ancient Greek mythology, with the body of a lion but also the head of a woman, wings of an eagle, and the tail of a serpent. This sphinx dwelt outside the city of Thebes and asked travelers a riddle in order to let them pass by: "Which is the creature that has one voice, but has four feet in the morning, two feet in the afternoon, and three feet at night?"
