Selenite is a crystallized form of Gypsum. It's a popular stone used in carvings due to the ease the crystal can be cut away. Selenite's name is derived from Greek selḗnē  meaning "moon"- the luminous glow from Selenite, especially when polished, makes the comparison all the more apt.
