Both natural and cultured pearls are formed when an irritant enters the mollusk causing it to respond to the irritant by coating it with iridescent nacre (the material that makes up pearl). The difference between cultured and natural pearls is that when cultivating pearls, the irritant is purposely placed inside the oyster through human intervention, whereas a natural pearl forms spontaneously in nature. With so much pollution, changing water temperatures, many sea-borne predators and other factors that cause premature deaths for the mollusks, finding quality natural pearls is extraordinarily rare.
