Inspired by the Egyptian scarab symbol, these vibrant earrings feature carved green Tourmaline stones encased in 14k gold.
Tourmaline is one of October’s birthstones and has one of the widest color ranges of any gem species. An Egyptian legend explains this variety by saying the gemstone traveled along a rainbow, gathering the diverse array of colors as it went. Due to Tourmaline’s wide array of colors, the gem has been mistaken as many different gems throughout history. In Brazil during the 1500s, a Spanish conquistador found a green Tourmaline crystal and believed he had found Emerald. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that this confusion was corrected and Tourmaline was made its own distinct mineral species.
Inspired by the beauty that the natural world provides, Rachel Atherley is constantly re-interpreting forms and patterns found in nature into sterling silver and gold pieces with hand selected gemstones.
