Prized for its geometric forms and capacity for luster, Pyrite (sometimes called “fool’s gold”) is an incredibly popular collector’s piece. Not only are collector worthy specimens gorgeous to look at, many localities have distinctive and diverse crystal habits, making the collection of them a fun challenge. Top localities include Spain, Italy, Washington State in the USA, and Peru, each having a unique form of pyrite. Spanish pyrite looks as if it had been carved and polished prior to discovery- the edges are exceedingly sharp and its faces are extremely smooth. Peruvian pyrite also leans towards cubic structures, but has striated texture along the faces. Italian pyrite forms in more complicated shapes, often octahedral.
