Honeycomb calcite, often referred to as "honey stone," is a captivating mineral unique to Utah's Uinta Mountains. Discovered in 1995 by Floyd Anderson, this translucent, amber-hued calcite features a distinctive honeycomb-like pattern formed by fibrous, tubular crystal structures. Honeycomb calcite's appeal lies in its warm coloration, ranging from pale yellow to deep amber, and its semi-translucent nature that emits a soft glow when backlit. The stone's honeycomb pattern results from its unique crystal growth, distinguishing it from other calcites.
In 2021, honeycomb calcite was officially designated as Utah's state stone. This recognition highlighted the stone's unique geological characteristics and its significance to the state's natural heritage. A notable display of honeycomb calcite can be found on the first floor of the Utah State Capitol, where a beehive emblem is inlaid with the stone, symbolizing Utah's nickname, "The Beehive State."
