A traditional decorative art technique, cloisonné involves soldering thin wire on an object to create small cells that are then filled with colored enamel and fired. This allows artists to create delicate designs. It’s believed that the technique emerged in the Near East over 2,000 years ago, traveling along trade routes through Mycenaean Greece, Byzantium, Yuan and Ming Dynasty China, and Meiji Period Japan. This style would adorn imperial regalia, religious icons, and ceremonial objects of each of these cultures.
In this glass ornament, the decorative metal wire is twisted and adhered to the glass and the cells filled with vitreous enamel to create a stained-glass effect.
