Commonly mistaken to be the fossil of a fern-like plant, Dendrites are a crystal that grows in a multi-branching form. Sometimes Dendrites are referred to as “pseudofossils” because to the untrained eye they look decidedly fossil-like, especially since they can appear in the same limestone quarries actual fossils appear in. Dendrites form when water rich in manganese and iron flows into and along fractures in the rock, depositing crystals as the water flows.
Dendrite usually occurs in limestone, making this Agate slice all the more special. Tree-like branches of inky black reach across this cloudy slab, adding striking dimension to an otherwise simplistic polished Agate slice.
