Baby Squash Blossom Necklace with Coral

Inspired by the iconic Southwestern jewelry, crafted by Navajo silversmiths as early as 1870, Mirta Tummino’s take on the Squash Blossom Necklace is studded with cabochons of polished red coral instead of the typical turquoise stones. The Squash Blossom Necklace design was first adopted by the Navajo, or Diné, people and quickly spread to neighboring Southwest tribes like the Zuni and Hopi, who contributed to the distinctive design. Today, the Squash Blossom is an art form made by many Native and non-Native artists throughout the Southwest. Handmade in her studio here in Houston, Texas, Tummino contributes to that artform with her coral variation of the necklace.

So why the name “Squash Blossom”? On a traditional Squash Blossom necklace, the smaller metal beads along the chain form a pomegranate-like shape that represents the blossom of flowering squash plants, which was also one of the primary crops in the American Southwest.

About the Craft
