Of the discovered calcite vases in King Tutankhamun’s tomb, the central vase was inlaid with fiaence- a ceramic material with a brightly colored glaze. Traces of brown reside was found inside perfumed oil, a substance essential for rituals and therefore highly valued. It is believed the tall vase was used to hold aromatic oils that could be used for anything from religious rituals and offerings to personal grooming.
The designs on these types of vases often depicted scenes from Egyptian mythology, or symbols associated with fertility, prosperity, or protection. The use and preservation of these oil vases reflects the importance of fragrance and aromatics in Ancient Egyptian culture.
