Titanotheres (or Brontotheres) were massive mammals that looked similar to modern rhinos, but were closely related to horses. Titanotheres lived  during the Eocene (56-34 million years ago), after the mass extinction event that wiped out dinosaurs. When Sioux tribes found Titanothere fossils, they named the creatures "thunder beasts"--a very accurate name, as Titanotheres were the largest creatures on land after the fall of dinosaurs. Interestingly, a Titanothere jaw was the first fossil from the White River Badlands to be described in a scientific journal in the mid-1800s, prompting paleontological study that has continued there through present day. This specimen was professionally excavated and prepared by the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research in South Dakota. 15 x 9 x 20 inches.
