This fossilized cluster of scallops (Gigantopectens restitutensis) offers a view into the ancient seafloor of the Upper Miocene epoch, 16-20 million years ago. These scallops likely were buried in the sand during a storm, which allowed for their long term preservation. This large scallop plate was excavated in France with the original matrix intact.
