A pair of amethyst geode cathedrals from Uruguay. Standing tall with a range of light and deep purple tones. The height makes for a statement interior design focal piece.
Deep underneath the volcanic rock of southern Brazil, beautiful things are happening. Hundreds of millions of years ago, volcanic eruptions in what is now southern Brazil created the mountainous basalt in Rio Grande do Sul, an area famous for highly pigmented amethyst as well as amethyst cathedrals. As the 2,400 degree Fahrenheit magma cooled, large quantities of gas were trapped while the magma hardened, forming hollow cavities in the newly formed basalt rock. Over time, mineral-rich groundwater would fill these cavities and create layers of agate and amethyst within them, filling the space with crystals. The larger cavities allowed for the creation of the stunning amethyst cathedrals we see today, including this 6-foot tall pair.
