Triceratops horridus
Late Cretaceous
Lance Formation

A sizeable section of a fossilized frill, a tooth with its root, and a carving of the beast itself – you could say this is the ultimate Triceratops package.

Three-horns, a parrot-like beak, and a large frill haloing its head, the Triceratops has one of the most striking silhouettes of the dinosaurs we know and love. These distinctive features still have paleontologists scratching their heads in regards to their use. Was the frill used for protection, heat regulation, or finding mates? Were the horns on its face used to fend off predators or used to fight each other?

Triceratops was one of the last non-avian dinosaurs to evolve before it went extinct during the thousands of years long Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) event, which resulted in wiping out the dinosaurs along with 60-70% of all life on Earth.
