We know Amethyst the best via the ancient Greeks, where the stone was called amethystos for “not intoxicated”. Associated with the God of Wine, Dionysus, wine-purple Amethyst was believed to prevent the wearer of the stone from overindulging. During feasts, revelers would keep the stone in hand or in their mouths to stay sober.

Across the Mediterranean, ancient Egyptians also held Amethyst in high regard. Its use in Egyptian culture dates back to 3000 BCE. Scarab talismans and seals were carved from Amethyst with the belief it would prevent witchcraft on the wearer. Amethyst has been found in many Egyptian tombs, including the tomb of Djer, the second pharaoh of the 1st dynasty, and the tomb of Tutankhamun.
