Agate Obelisk Carving

A rectangular stone pillar topped with a pyramidion, the Ancient Egyptian obelisks were first called tekhen. We know them by their Greek name, obeliskos, so named by the Greek historian Herodotus. These structures first appeared in Egypt's Old Kingdom around 2300 BCE. They're erected to commemorate an occasion and honor the gods. Each obelisk was carved from a single piece of stone, which was then moved to its final location.
