King Amenhotep III (1390-1353 BC) ruled ancient Egypt during a time of relative peace and prosperity, which Egypt did not experience again until the reign of Ramses II. Amenhotep devoted his 30 year reign towards building diplomatic and trade relations with the surrounding empires, which helped fund his large construction projects throughout Egypt and Nubia- his main building project was his mortuary temple on the west bank at Thebes, modern Luxor, probably the largest temple built in Egypt. His building sprees created a large body of skilled sculptors and carvers, and their experiments with new styles of sculpture and relief carvings refined traditional forms into elegant and sophisticated art.
