Across the Mediterranean, ancient Egyptians held Amethyst in high regard. Its use in Egyptian culture dates back to 3000 BCE. Scarab talismans and seals were carved from Amethyst with the belief it would prevent witchcraft on the wearer. Amethyst has been found in many Egyptian tombs, including the tomb of Djer, the second pharaoh of the 1^st dynasty, and the tomb of Tutankhamun.
