While not part of humans 206 piece collection, the baculum is a bone found in most mammalian species. But what it? For the mammals who have it, the baculum is a bone located in the males genitalia. The specific purpose is still unknown, but is believed to aid in the animals mating strategy. Alaskan Natives have referred to this bone as “oosik” and has very little use in terms of bone carving. Only a few archeological examples of carved oosiks exist as the dense bone is difficult to carve. The carved oosiks that do exist often have been commissioned by tourists as “conversation-starter” souvenirs for home. This baculum is a good example from a Northern Pacific Walrus, Odobenus rosmarus, polished but still displaying the mottled brown patina to indicate it as a fossil, as well as the honeycomb bone structure on each end.
