A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet as these barite rose rocks. Barite-sand rosettes are Oklahoma’s state rock (but not their state flower) as they are mostly unique to the “Sooner State,” occurring in a state-long outcrop of Garber Sandstone. The disc-shaped barite crystals contain quartz sand with small amounts of hematite to give the rock their dark rose to cinnamon color. The roses “grow” from Oklahoma’s red Permian sandstone that is over 250 million years old, though the roses themselves can be much younger than that. In fact, some may still be forming today. Each petal is a single crystal of barite, their disk-like shape uncommon amongst other barite specimens.
