Stimulate imagination and creativity with the 4M Glow 3D Dinosaur. Decorate ceilings and walls or build dioramas with these glow-in-the-dark dinosaurs. This set includes double sided tape to easily affix the dinosaurs to any hard surface. Activate and recharge the glow by exposing the dinosaur pieces to light. Turn off the lights and watch these dinosaurs glow-in-the-darkness. This set is recommended for ages 3 years and up.
Things to explore with your dinosaurs:
- Turn out the lights -- are your dinosaurs glowing?
- Try shining a flashlight directly at a dinosaur for ten seconds (or just hold it close to a lamp), then check out the glow (you’ll need to turn your flashlight off or set it down so it doesn’t shine anywhere) -- is it any different compared to a dinosaur you didn’t ‘charge up’? What about 30 seconds? What if your light is closer or farther away?
- Try shining the flashlight through one side of a pair of sunglasses to ‘charge up’ your dinosaur -- what happens?
- If you have a board game with a transparent sheet of red plastic (some have this to reveal answers on special cards), try shining through that too!
- Does a different light source work better? What seems to make a difference?
- Optional step for an adult -- if you have an ultraviolet light or ‘blacklight’, use that to shine on your glow dinosaur.
Additional Notes: The kind of glow this makes is called phosphorescence (FOSS-fuh-REH-sents). When things glow-in-the-dark, they release energy they absorbed from a light source. When you ‘charge it up,’ the amount of energy ‘charging it up’ makes a difference -- using a brighter light or an ultraviolet light gives a brighter glow, and filtering the light so only some light gets through can change the glow too . Phosphorescence is a little difference from fluorescence (flo-REH-sents) -- fluorescent objects release light almost instantaneously after something shines on them so they don’t glow in the dark for minutes or hours like phosphorescent toys do.
