English major, artist, professional puppeteer, musical comedian- jeweler Sallyjane has made the round looking for an art medium to call home. It wasn’t until she started going to gem shows and got a piece of rutilated quartz wrapped when inspiration struck. Sallyjane started experimenting with wire-wrapped jewelry, and three years later went fulltime with the craft. For over 25 years, Sallyjane has been making wire wrapped jewelry with the crystals, fossils, meteorites, and gemstones from around the world with her husband, Steve. Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, they travel across the US to showcase Sallyjane’s jewelry at gem and craft shows.
Rose Quartz in jewelry dates back all the way to 7,000 BCE of Mesopotamia, the region known today as Iraq. Beads of Rose Quartz have also been crafted by Assyrians, Romans and Ancient Egyptians. Many cultures around the world have believed the beautiful pink stone was imbued with various magical properties, and Ancient Romans, Egyptians, and Greek civilizations used various Quartz varieties as talismans. Romans used Rose Quartz as a seal to display ownership, while the Ancient Egyptians used the stone to prevent aging (one has to wonder if the Rose Quartz beauty tools on the market today has something to do with this!) Even in the Americas, early civilizations used amulets to balance the emotions and heal anger, dubbing it the “love stone”. Even as late as the Middle Ages in Europe, Quartz was used in the making of healing potions.
