English major, artist, professional puppeteer, musical comedian- jeweler Sallyjane has made the round looking for an art medium to call home. It wasn’t until she started going to gem shows and got a piece of rutilated quartz wrapped when inspiration struck. Sallyjane started experimenting with wire-wrapped jewelry, and three years later went fulltime with the craft. For over 25 years, Sallyjane has been making wire wrapped jewelry with the crystals, fossils, meteorites, and gemstones from around the world with her husband, Steve. Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, they travel across the US to showcase Sallyjane’s jewelry at gem and craft shows.
The pyritized ammonite fossils are from Russia. They are called “pyrite replacement” fossils because iron pyrite ate through the original fossil material and replaced it. These are about 200 million years old. You can see that the species is very different from the Madagascar ammonites used in other Sallyjane pieces.
