An aggregate of quartz and chalcedony, Jasper is an opaque variety of silica whose color variations are due to the different minerals/impurities found within it. Jasper means “spotted/speckled stone” and has been used in tool making since the 4th and 5th millennia BCE.
Jasper was a valuable stone in antiquity, and its name can be traced from Old French and Latin, as well as Greek, Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, and Akkadian origins. Although jasper can form in all of the colors of the rainbow, in antiquity, jasper was identified in its red and green forms. The stone was often adorned by shamans, kings, priests, and warriors of early Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Germanic Vikings due to the perceived protective powers against illness and evil. Red jasper was also considered a symbol of motherhood and fertility in Ancient Egypt
