Seymchan meteorites originated from the core-mantle bounder of an asteroid that broke apart elsewhere in the solar system. After making its way across the system, it eventually bumped into Earth after getting caught in its orbit thousands of years ago and made its way to the surface.
Discovered in the late 1960’s in a dry river bed near the settlement of Seymchan in the Magadan Oblast (district) of Russia, the Seymchan meteorite was misclassified as an IIE anomalous coarse octahedrite. New material was discovered in 2004 which contained olivine crystals, revealing the silicate nature of the meteorite. It was reclassified in 2006 as a pallasite meteorite.
This Seymchan meteorite float contains interesting crystal lattice lines on both sides of itself. These are called Widmanstätten patterns, is the result of the very slow intergrowth of two iron-nickle minerals, kamacite and taenite, creating this extraterrestrial steel. Started as molten metal in the core of the asteroid, as the metal cooled it crystalized into taenite, and as it cooled further, small kamacite crystals grew within the taenite. The pattern seen in the specimen would have taken millions of years to grow.
