English major, artist, professional puppeteer, musical comedian- jeweler Sallyjane has made the round looking for an art medium to call home. It wasn’t until she started going to gem shows and got a piece of rutilated quartz wrapped when inspiration struck. Sallyjane started experimenting with wire-wrapped jewelry, and three years later went fulltime with the craft. For over 25 years, Sallyjane has been making wire wrapped jewelry with the crystals, fossils, meteorites, and gemstones from around the world with her husband, Steve. Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, they travel across the US to showcase Sallyjane’s jewelry at gem and craft shows.
The best quality lapis comes from Afghanistan. This material sometimes has little specks of iron pyrite or white calcite in it. Lapis has been mined in Afghanistan as early as the 7th millennium BCE and has been discovered in many ancient burial grounds. In the middle ages, it was used not only for jewelry, but was ground into a powder and made into “ultramarine,” the finest and most expensive of blue pigments. This pigment was used by Renaissance and Baroque artists, often reserved to paint the clothing of the central figures of their paintings, especially the Virgin Mary.
