Common appearances of chalcedony (as chalcedony instead of the catch-all term) is a pastel shade of blue to gray to white, with light translucency. Also used to describe botryoidal specimens. It is found worldwide in a variety of environments, such as nodules, veins, and crusts. It has been used as a gemstone since antiquity, it appears in Pliny the Elder’sNaturalis Historiaas a term for a translucent type of Jasper.
