The Book of the Dead is an ancient Egyptian funerary text from the New Kingdom (about 1550 BCE) to approximately 50 BCE. It was placed in the coffin or burial chamber of the deceased. A number of spells which make up the book continued to be separately inscribed on tomb walls and sarcophagi. There was no single or canonical Book fo the Dead, surviving papyri contain varying selections of relgious and magical texts, and vary considerably in their illustration.
