A vivid blue Apatite Parrot is perched on a deeply saturated Citrine piece. The colors of the parrot and its chosen perch contrast beautifully and create an appealing pairing to the eye.
Apatite is the name of a group of phosphate minerals with similar chemical compositions and physical properties. They are an important constituent of phosphorite, a rock mined for its phosphorus content and used to make fertilizers, acids, and chemicals.
Blue apatite has a very unique character, along with great color play in the light. Apatite is not a single mineral but a group of phosphate based minerals that includes hydroxylapatite, fluorapatite, and chlorapatite. Fluorapatite is by far the most common variety and can be found as both hexagonal crystals in many colors and massive forms.
Like amethyst, Citrine is a quartz variant found in geodes and gets its color from iron impurities. With shades ranging from the perfect summer orange to a strong amber honey, most of the world’s citrine is found in Brazil. Queen Victoria had a particular fondness for the stone, and had it used as decoration in her summer residence in the mid 19th century.
