English major, artist, professional puppeteer, musical comedian- jeweler Sallyjane has made the round looking for an art medium to call home. It wasn’t until she started going to gem shows and got a piece of rutilated quartz wrapped when inspiration struck. Sallyjane started experimenting with wire-wrapped jewelry, and three years later went fulltime with the craft. For over 25 years, Sallyjane has been making wire wrapped jewelry with the crystals, fossils, meteorites, and gemstones from around the world with her husband, Steve. Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, they travel across the US to showcase Sallyjane’s jewelry at gem and craft shows.
The deep purple amethyst crystals come from Uruguay. The crystal clusters are amethyst that has formed on agate. In Uruguay there are hollow underground lava tubes that have filled up with quartz crystals. (Amethyst and citrine are both forms of quartz.) When you see a large amethyst “cathedral” it’s usually from one of these tubes. Sometimes stalactites form in the tubes. They begin as agate stalactites, then quartz or amethyst crystals form around them, completely covering the agate. A cross section of these stalactites looks like a quartz/amethyst flower with an agate center.
