English major, artist, professional puppeteer, musical comedian- jeweler Sallyjane has made the round looking for an art medium to call home. It wasn’t until she started going to gem shows and got a piece of rutilated quartz wrapped when inspiration struck. Sallyjane started experimenting with wire-wrapped jewelry, and three years later went fulltime with the craft. For over 25 years, Sallyjane has been making wire wrapped jewelry with the crystals, fossils, meteorites, and gemstones from around the world with her husband, Steve. Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, they travel across the US to showcase Sallyjane’s jewelry at gem and craft shows.

The unique banded rhodochrosite forms as stalagmites and stalactites in 13th century Inca silver mines in Argentina. They formed from precipitating water dripping from the manganese-rich rock inside the ancient mine tunnels, and kept on growing over the centuries into large stalagmites. The mine in Capillitas, Argentina where banded rhodochrosite is gathered has an altitude of 10,000 ft. The beautiful hot pink shades often seen in rhodochrosite crystals and in its banded form stem from manganese and calcium.
