Bottle openers only became common kitchen items after the crown top was invented during the Second Industrial Revolution by a Baltimore bottler named William Painter in 1892. Bottlers embraced the new technology that not only kept product fresh, but also increased assembly line efficiency. Promotional, figural, and novelty bottle openers soon became popular.
