The Scutella stelatta sand dollar was a flattened, burrowing creature that dwelled on the bottom of soft ocean floors. Sand dollars are members of the echinoderm family. Echinoderms (phylum Echinodermata-"spiny skin") are one of the most numerous of marine phyla. This phylum appeared around the beginning of the Cambrian period and today there are 7,000 living species of this family in the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic and Antarctic Ocean. Echinoderms are important both biologically and geologically because of their abundance in deep and shallow waters. Their fossilized remains are a major component of limestone formations and can provide valuable clues to the geological environment. Approximately 4"x5"x2"
